Why Wedding Bands Scratch So Easily<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hardness is measured on the Mohs scale, a 1 to 10 test in which a harder material scratches a softer one. Diamond sits at 10. Quartz, the mineral in beach sand and most household grit, sits at 7. Every wedding band metal sits below both, because gold, platinum and the alloys mixed into them are softer than a grain of sand. On your own hand, one contact matters most: beside an engagement ring, the diamond wins every meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, and the karat decides how fast. 10K is 41.7% gold and the hardest of the three, so it holds its surface longest. 14K is 58.3% gold and the most common wedding band metal. 18K is 75% gold, the deepest yellow and the softest, so it shows marks first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Platinum marks just as readily, but its marks displace metal rather than remove it, so a jeweler can burnish the surface back to a shine. It is white all the way through, with no plating to wear off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The finish usually matters more than the metal. A high polish is a mirror: light reflects in one direction, so a single hairline breaks that reflection. A satin, cross satin, sand blast or wire matte finish scatters the light instead, and the same hairline disappears into the texture. A scratch resistant wedding band is, in that sense, a finish decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trade is repair: a high polish can be brought back in one spot, while a textured finish has to be re-textured across the whole band, because a spot polish leaves a shiny patch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most scratches are cosmetic. A few are worth a visit: a deep gouge where a prong is set, a thin spot at the base of the band, or a prong that has shifted. Anything that changes the shape of the band is a repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
