Understanding Gold Karats

Gold purity is measured in karats (K). Pure gold is 24K. Lower karat values indicate gold alloyed with other metals for durability:

  • 24K — 99.9% pure, softest and most valuable per gram
  • 22K — 91.7% pure, popular for fine jewelry and coins
  • 18K — 75.0% pure, the standard for luxury jewelry worldwide
  • 14K — 58.3% pure, the most popular choice for everyday jewelry in the US
  • 10K — 41.7% pure, the minimum karat sold as gold in the US

Frequently Asked Questions

The gold price per gram is calculated by dividing the spot price per troy ounce by 31.1035 (grams per troy ounce) to get the 24K price per gram. For other karats, multiply by the purity fraction: 22K = 22/24, 18K = 18/24, 14K = 14/24, and 10K = 10/24. For example, if gold is $2,650/oz, the 14K price per gram would be ($2,650 ÷ 31.1035) × (14/24) = ~$49.70/gram.

Our calculator fetches live spot prices from market data providers. Prices are refreshed multiple times per day to ensure accuracy while keeping page loads fast. You can click "Refresh Prices" at any time, or manually enter the exact price you want to calculate with.

A troy ounce (31.1035 grams) is heavier than a standard avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 grams). Precious metals are always quoted in troy ounces. This calculator uses troy ounces for all conversions.

14K gold offers the best balance of purity, durability, and value. At 58.3% pure gold, it's hard enough for everyday wear while maintaining a beautiful gold color. It's significantly more affordable than 18K or 22K while still being a high-quality precious metal. Most wedding bands and engagement rings in the US are made in 14K gold.

Yes. Enter the current spot price (or your dealer's buy price) and the weight of your scrap metal. The calculator will show the melt value for each karat. Keep in mind that dealers typically pay 70–90% of melt value for scrap gold, depending on quantity and purity.
