Engraving is the oldest way to put a design on a ring: cut it into the metal, so the pattern is shadow and edge rather than anything applied to the surface. Everything on this page is worked that way. Greek key and chain repeats, parallel grooves and ridges, waves, honeycomb, milgrain borders, floral motifs and freehand engraved panels, each cut below the surface where daily wear cannot reach it.
Machine carved, milled or hand engraved
Three kinds of cutting sit in this collection. Carved patterns repeat a motif around the band with mechanical regularity, which suits geometry: key patterns, grooves, steps and twists. Milled designs are cut for crisp modern detail. Hand engraved work is cut freehand at the bench, the slowest and most individual of the three: no two hand engraved bands come out quite identical. Whatever the method, depth decides how the band ages. A shallow cut rounds over into vague texture within a few years of daily wear; a properly deep one keeps its shadow lines for decades. It is the one question worth asking of any engraved ring, here or anywhere else.
The patterns
Geometric work leads the collection: Greek key, grooved and ridged bands, wavy and angled cuts, step and grooved edges, honeycomb and twist designs. Floral and vintage motifs follow, from single flower accents to full carved garlands. Many designs run two colors of gold so the pattern reads in color as well as relief, and most pair a satin, wire matte or sandblasted field with polished edges so the cut stays visible as the ring wears. Widths run from 5mm to 10mm with 7mm the most common, in 10K, 14K and 18K gold and in platinum.
