Prong Re-tipping

Jewelry Definition

Prong Re-tipping

Prong re-tipping is a jewelry repair process where worn or damaged prongs are rebuilt by adding new metal to the tips, restoring their ability to securely hold gemstones.

Prongs naturally wear down over time from daily contact with surfaces, becoming thin and potentially allowing stones to become loose or fall out. Re-tipping involves adding small amounts of matching metal to the prong ends, shaping them properly, and ensuring they hold the stone securely.

Engagement rings should have prongs inspected every 6-12 months and re-tipped when they show wear. This preventive maintenance is much less expensive than replacing a lost diamond. Well-maintained prongs protect your investment and keep jewelry safe to wear.
