Both are real diamonds. The honest differences are price, rarity, resale value, and the story the stone carries — here’s how to weigh them and choose well.

Choosing between a natural and a lab-grown diamond is one of the first decisions most couples face — and it’s often framed the wrong way. The real question isn’t which origin is “better.” Both are genuine diamonds. The question is which one fits your budget, your priorities, and the look you want on your hand for the rest of your life.
After years of setting both kinds of stones, we’ve learned that a poorly chosen natural diamond will never outshine a masterfully cut lab-grown one — and vice versa. Below is an honest, side-by-side comparison, including the parts most retailers skip: what resale really looks like, what changed in grading in 2025, and where the sustainability claims hold up.
Are natural and lab-grown diamonds the same thing?
Chemically and physically, yes. Both are pure crystallized carbon with the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), the same brilliance, and the same fire. Both pass a standard diamond tester, both are laser-inscribed and certified by independent laboratories, and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission recognizes both as diamonds — its definition of a diamond no longer includes the word “natural.” To the naked eye, and to most jewelers without specialized lab equipment, they are indistinguishable.
The only real difference is how they form. That single difference drives everything else: rarity, price, and the story the stone carries.
How each one forms
Natural diamonds crystallized one to three billion years ago, roughly 100 miles below the surface, under extreme heat and pressure — then rode ancient volcanic eruptions up to where they could be mined. The supply is finite, and no two stones formed the same way. That rarity is exactly the appeal: a natural diamond carries a geologic history no laboratory can replicate.
Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled facilities that replicate those same conditions — the process just takes two to six weeks instead of eons. Two methods dominate:
HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature)
Recreates the earth’s mantle: carbon is subjected to pressures over 1.5 million PSI and temperatures above 2,700°F until it crystallizes around a diamond seed — the closest mimic of natural formation.
CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)
Builds the diamond atom by atom: carbon-rich gas breaks down in a vacuum chamber and deposits onto a thin diamond seed, layer by layer. Most CVD stones are Type IIa — a purity level found in less than 2% of natural diamonds.
Neither method produces a “better” diamond — quality comes down to the individual stone’s cut, color, and clarity, exactly as it does with natural diamonds.

What you’ll actually pay
Because lab-grown diamonds can be produced at scale, they cost dramatically less than natural stones of the same quality — typically 40–60% less — and the gap widens with size. Natural diamond prices climb steeply with carat weight because large rough is genuinely rare; lab-grown prices rise far more gently.

That value is why lab-grown stones now account for the majority of engagement-ring center stones sold in the U.S. On the same budget, you can move up two to three times in carat weight, or step up to a D–F color and VVS clarity — or put the savings toward the setting or a matching wedding band.
Worth knowing: lab-grown prices are still falling — retail prices have dropped by well over half since 2020. Great news on the day you buy; it’s also the main reason resale is weak, which brings us to the part most retailers skip.
The honest part: resale value
Neither kind of diamond is an investment — every retail stone resells below its purchase price. But the difference in degree is real, and you should hear it before you buy, not after.
Natural diamonds typically recover somewhere between 20% and 60% of retail on resale, and their prices have historically held relatively steady because supply is finite. An heirloom-quality natural stone can be re-set, passed down, or traded up for meaningful value decades later.
Lab-grown diamonds recover far less — often 10–40% at best, and sometimes close to nothing on the secondary market — because a buyer can always purchase a brand-new stone for less than last year’s price. If there’s any real chance you’ll want to resell or trade up later, that asymmetry should weigh into your decision.
The right way to think about it: a lab-grown diamond is something you buy to wear and love, like a wedding dress or a watch you’ll never sell. A natural diamond adds a store-of-value dimension — you pay a premium for it, and you keep more of that premium over time.
Certification & grading: what changed in 2025
Both kinds of diamonds are evaluated by the same independent laboratories against the 4Cs — cut, color, clarity, and carat — and both are laser-inscribed on the girdle with their report number, which is how any stone’s identity and origin can be verified.
One recent change is worth understanding when you compare certificates. As of October 1, 2025, GIA no longer issues full color and clarity grades for lab-grown diamonds; it describes them simply as “Premium” or “Standard,” reasoning that most lab-grown stones cluster in a narrow high-quality range. IGI continues to grade lab-grown diamonds on the complete 4Cs scale, exactly as it does natural stones — which is why IGI reports are now the standard for lab-grown diamonds, and why every lab-grown diamond we sell is IGI certified.
Whatever stone you consider, anywhere you shop: insist on an independent certificate (IGI or GIA), and confirm that the inscription on the stone matches the report.
Can anyone tell them apart?
Not by looking. Side by side under a loupe, a well-cut lab-grown diamond and a well-cut natural diamond are visually identical — same sparkle, same fire, same scintillation. Standard handheld diamond testers can’t separate them either, because both conduct heat exactly the same way.
Gemological laboratories can distinguish them, using instruments that read a stone’s growth pattern and trace chemistry: natural diamonds almost always contain traces of nitrogen, while most lab-grown stones contain none. In everyday life, the practical identifier is simpler — the microscopic laser inscription on the girdle and the certificate that goes with it. That’s also your assurance of full transparency: a certified stone can never be misrepresented.
Don’t confuse lab-grown diamonds with simulants
A lab-grown diamond is not the same thing as moissanite or cubic zirconia. Those are diamond simulants — different materials entirely that merely resemble diamond. A lab-grown diamond is diamond.

Simulants have their place in fashion jewelry, but they don’t wear, sparkle, or last like diamond — and they carry no gemological certification of diamond quality.
Ethics & sustainability, without the marketing gloss
Lab-grown diamonds have a genuinely cleaner origin story in two respects: they are conflict-free by definition — you know exactly where the stone came from — and growing a diamond disturbs no land and moves no earth, versus the tons of ore processed for each mined carat.
The full picture deserves nuance, though. Growing diamonds is energy-intensive, and the climate benefit depends heavily on the electricity powering the reactors — a grower on renewable power has a footprint near zero, while one on a coal-heavy grid does not. (The FTC has formally warned sellers against blanket “eco-friendly” claims for exactly this reason.) On the other side, modern natural-diamond mining operates under the Kimberley Process and supports millions of livelihoods in producing countries.
Our view: the ethical and environmental edge tips toward lab-grown, but it’s an honest edge, not a halo. If sustainability drives your decision, ask any jeweler — including us — about the provenance of the specific stone you’re considering.
So which one is better?
Neither — and that’s the honest answer. Most people don’t love a diamond because of where it came from. They love it because of how it looks and what it means to them.
Choose natural if…
Rarity, geologic heritage, and long-term value retention matter to you, and the premium fits your budget. No two natural stones formed the same way, and yours will hold more of its worth over the decades.
Choose lab-grown if…
You want the largest, best-cut, highest-grade stone your budget allows, and you plan to keep the ring rather than resell it. Same beauty, same forever — more diamond per dollar.
